Honkytonks, Heartaches,
& Porktomic Art at Coffee Blue
Greg Phoenix will appear at Coffee Blue in Belmar on
Friday August 8th at 9 PM. Long known as the guitar-slinging
singer for NJ psychobilly band Speed Crazy, he returns to his acoustic
roots in this solo project. But the characters found in his “Americana
Gothic” repertoire are still likely to be found at the dark end of the
street. They are “…taunted by chaos, dread, and confrontation.
But…earthy, funny, sexy, they have more in common with Hank than with
Tennessee Williams.” Also no stranger to the rockabilly scene is
special guest Mistress Debra. She has opened for national acts
such as Dick Dale, and with her band, the Dynamites, she recently shared
the stage with Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite boys.
The night will also be the closing of an
ongoing art exhibit by Porkchop. A rogues’ gallery of rock’n’roll
icons, his works often feature hot rods, tattoos, and fast women. His
art has been featured at the Asbury Art Center, the Ocean County Art Guild,
Harry’s Roadhouse, and CBGB. His works can be viewed at
www.porktomic.com.
Since it opened last December,
Coffee Blue has hosted a variety of local bands and solo artists.
In addition to its Wednesday open mic nights, the coffeehouse features
comedy on Tuesdays, and tarot card readings on Thursdays. It is located
at 1000 Main Street in Belmar, or call Rich Cali at (732) 280-6000.
“(Greg
Phoenix is) rockabilly, pop, and dark-edged folk…a healthy dose of
the ironic, cynic, and lovesick – but in the end, it’s all in good fun”
